Why choose a gravel bike on the road?
Gravel bikes can be classified as an intersection between road bikes and mountain bikes - in a way they combine the advantages of both models, the speed of the road bike and the robustness of the mountain bikes. They are light, fast and efficient on smooth surfaces, but still strong and stable enough to handle moderate terrain.
Versatility is a key factor in the popularity of gravel bikes! Their geometry and riding position are not as radical and efficient as possible, but rather geared towards long-distance comfort and stability. The gravel bike has become the best choice for many cyclists.
More usage scenarios
Gravel bikes are suitable for a wide range of usage scenarios: roads, mountains, muddy trails, etc. Earlier we talked about mounts, and the X-Gravel has them. On the frame you will find three sets of bottle cage mounts. There are rear rack mounts in case you don't want to use bikepacking bags: mounts for top tube bags and mounts for three-packs on the forks. Fork mounts are excellent and make carrying a lot of stuff a lot easier.
ICAN X-Gravel vs Salsa Gravel Bikes
Cheaper
Have you ever looked at Salsa gravel bikes and wished you could afford their Warbird? That was the inspiration for the X-Gravel bike. The X-Gravel comes in at the same price as a Salsa Warbird frame. The X-Gravel bike frame costs the same as Salsa's aluminum offerings.
That means if you buy an ICAN X-Gravel, you'll still have enough money left over to buy all the bikepacking accessories you need. You will need a lot, and with a gravel bike that doesn't take up your entire budget, you will be able to get all the things that will help you along the way.
Do you recommend used gravel bikes?
Should you buy a new or used gravel bike? This is a decision you have to make yourself. Experience has shown that after the first 1,500 kilometers, the bike will need some maintenance, such as changing the chain or tires, but the frame will have less impact, and a good gravel frame can even be used for decades. If your budget is limited, you can definitely find cheaper gravel bikes on the used market.
Why is a carbon gravel bike better than an alloy gravel bike?
Carbon gravel bikes are more comfortable and stiffer.
Carbon material is compliant and supple.
Carbon bikes respond faster, which makes it easy to change the direction of the carbon weave to bring the stiffness in a certain direction and at a certain place.
What is the most important part of a gravel bike?
A crucial part for gravel bikes are their brakes. Gravel involves riding off-road, and riding off-road makes the bike obstacles a little less predictable, and you'll need to stop quickly, even in potentially adverse weather conditions or when you're fully loaded if you're bikepacking.
We've therefore designed this frameset to be able to run flat mount disc brakes. Disc brakes mean you can stop quickly and safely, but to do that your frame and fork also need to be stiffer. That's why we decided against quick releases and went to 12mm thru-axle wheel mounts. We've also incorporated the Toray T700 fibers into a very stiff but compliant frameset, reinforced by our BB86 bottom bracket. The stiffness will help you accelerate just as quickly as it will allow you to decelerate with the disc brakes.
