Replacing a spoke - text version
To replace a broken spoke, you'll need a few tools.
- Reifenheber
- spoke wrench
- flathead screwdriver
- New spoke in the correct length
- If the spoke is on the drive side of the rear wheel, you may also need tools to remove the cassette.
- A cup of tea will help you avoid stress.
Now you can start replacing your spoke. If you need to remove your cassette, this is the first step in this repair.
Ⅰ. Deflate the tire and remove it from the wheel. Then you will need to remove your rim tape. Using tubeless tires is a lot messier and less fun than a regular tire and tube.
Ⅱ. Remove the old nipple and the remains of the spoke.
Ⅲ. Go to the hub of your wheel and remove the remains of the spoke there.
Ⅳ. Look at your wheel and see the spoke pattern. The new spoke must replicate this pattern. For example, if your wheel is a 3-cross-spoke wheel, the spoke will cross over the first two spokes on the outside and then pass under the third spoke on the way to the rim. If your wheel is radially laced, this is easier.

Ⅴ. You need to have a nipple ready for the spoke coming out of the hub. The easiest way to attach a nipple is to use the old spoke and put it through the rim eyelet. Now screw in the nipple and pull it through.
Ⅵ. Now place your flathead screwdriver on the back of the nipple and unscrew the old spoke.
Now start screwing the new spoke into the nipple. Bring tension to the spoke. It is easier to use the spoke wrench than the screwdriver.
